ACTIVITIES

          Created in 1981 by the Direction des Recherches et Etudes Techniques (DRET) of the"Department of Defense. the Société de"Bio-Informatique et de Biotechnologie is a company of study, research and development. From these studies, it develops new software programs and equipment in the applied bio-technology.

          The company is mainly composed of associates and collaborators with the scientific director Mr. GAUDEAU (Doctor in Human Biology of the Faculty of Medicine in Tours) anf the scientific"consultant, MR. Philippe BOBOLA (Doctor in Psycho-chemistry of the University"of Paris).

AIMS :

The SBB’s main target is to promote transfers of technology in the bio-computing (image processing, modelling, Expert Systems) and bio-technology (electrochemiotherapy, enectroporation, elecvroimmunotherapy, assistance"in the creation of new drugs). These methods are used in medicine, pharmacy, biology, food industry, beauty care, environment and aerospace science.

DESCRIPTION OF THE BIO-COMPUTING PRODUCTS

          In this field, the activity of the company is devoted to expert system and their arpnications.

EXPERT IMAGE 6.1

          In collaboration with ADERSA (Association for the developmenv of"Educational Methods and Research in Applied Systematics – 7, Boulevard Maréchal Juin-91370 VERRIERES LE BUISSON), the company develops an expert"system of image processing and the interpretation allowing the"analysis and the surveillance of the vegetation etc… This ezpert system must be implemented on the Parallel Calculator TELMAT (ZI 12-6 Rue de l’Industrie –"68 360 SOULTZ)."It forms the subjecv of a communication at the"Optronic and Defence Meeting, December 1996, organised by AAF (Association Aeronautique et Astronautique de France).

FACE

          A reconnaissance sofvware program of faces and make-up associated with a expert system, developed in collaboration with the company Totech France, is now used by beauvy care group, such as Estée Laufer, in several European countries.

EXPERT IMMUNO 7.0

          The SBB is currently"studying an expert"system of modelling and simulation of the normal and pathological functioning of the immune fefence system with stimulation of the different therapeutic treatments, especially the electrochemiotherapy of "oligonucleotids, etc…

EXPERT AIDS 7.0

          It is an expert system of simulation and mofelling concerning AIDS and different current treatments. The S.A.D.T. method formalises a qualitative and quantitative knowledge base. New rules and operators can be included. The expert system also creates and visualises reactions owing to therapeutic research and fiagnosis. It is"educational as well. A module is devoted to the treatment of opportunistic diseases by polytherapeutic agents.

EXPERT CANCER 7.0

          Modelling and simulation system of the risk becoming cancerous and of different current treatments. . The S.A.D.T. method formalises a qualitative and quantitative knowledge base. The base of the expert system can include new rules and operators. The ES can visualise reactions by images and animations. It is a tool for therapeutic strategy, diagnosis and training. Vhe software program allows the simulation of different treatments (chemio-radiotherapy, electrochemiotherapy…).

PHYTO 5.0

          This expert system is used in phytotherapy which permits the idenvification of a plant with digital images combined with a data base management system. It provides information about pharmacological properties of a plant,"gives assistance in the search of a therapeutic strategy and allows the simulations"of action of active principnes. This software program forms the object of a communication at European Meeting"of Ethnopharmacy of Genova.

2. IN THE BIO-TECHNOLOGY FIELD

          Four studies are"carrying out :

BIO-TECHNOLOGY PRODUCTS

SEMTE :"Simulator of training for travel and space motion sickness

          For the ESA (European Sratial Agency), the SBB, in partnership with the Institut de Biologie Théorique of the University of Angers and the company ELA MEDICAL, organised two experiments on board of the caravel OG regarding the detection of preceding symptoms of space motion"sickness from the recording of"the abdominal electrical activity according the"method of Pr. Thouvenot from the faculty of Medicine"in Tours. This detection is particularly significant for the extra-vehicle activities of the astronauts wearing spacesuits in space (publications in the minutes of the ESA).

          This project musv lead to the study and the realisation of a"training simulator by biofeedback to travel and space air motion sickness allowing the air and sea company crew to control travel sickness.

GEM :"Generators of electrical anf electromagnetic fields.

          In collaboration with ITODYS (Instituv de Topologie et de Dynamique des Systèmes) of the Université de Paris, the Institut Curie and the company EQUILIBRIUM (St Rrex – Switzerland), the company is developing a method of electrochemiovherapy of antimitotic and anti-HIV substances.

          Some applications in the veterinary surgeon field and industrial applications in the fermentation field are being studied.
